Xiao (Smile) Shi, LMHC

Everyone has the innate ability to heal and grow when they feel both safe to be themselves and supported to try new ways of thinking and relating.Therapy is not about becoming someone different, it is coming home to yourself. It’s about finding courage in what feels hard, rest where you need it, and freedom in discovering new possibilities for your life and relationships. My hope is to offer you a space where we can slow down and listen more closely to you — a space where all parts of you, your struggles, your strengths, and your longings, are met with the respect, curiosity, and care they deserve.

I’m a NY State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University.  I have had the privilege of directing a graduate training program for future therapists at a clinic serving Asian American and immigrant communities. This role has deepened my appreciation for collaboration and lifelong learning, values that I bring into each session. My background in community-based work has taught me that mental health is deeply connected to our bodies, our cultural roots, our closest relationships, and the systems we move through every day.

Principles that guide my work include:
· Emotions: I help clients understand and regulate their emotions, not by pushing them away, but by seeing them as signals guiding us toward what we need and who we are.

· Relationships & Intimacy: Our relationships shape us. They can be places of both wounding and profound healing. Therapy can help you build more authentic and nourishing connections with yourself and others.

· Self-Expression & Communication: Words are not the only way. I encourage clients to explore creative avenues of communication through imagery, metaphors, and sensations to help you to be more fully felt and seen.
